Rep. Michelle Mc-Cane, D-Tulsa, passed HB 1945 last week, unanimously out of the Civil Judiciary Committee.
The bill requires landlords, owners, and operators of public lodging such as apartments and hotels with at least five rental units or properties to subject all employees to a background screening as a condition of employment.
It also requires landlords, owners, and operators to maintain a log that tracks the issuance and return of keys for all units.
“Renters and tenants deserve to feel safe in their own home, which is why I am thankful the committee unanimously agreed to get this bill passed,” McCane said.
“We know that increased access to peoples’ properties without regulation increases the risk of danger, and this is one way we can circumvent those risks to keep Oklahomans safe.”
