Enrollment is open for the final section of the John Hair Cultural Center and Keetoowah Museum’s “Getting Back to Basics” series begins in February. It’s hard to say which one of the sections is most popular – the canning, quilting, or foraging/ gathering, because they are all well attended, fun and valuable.
The final section of classes will begin with buckbrush gathering on the UKB grounds on Feb. 22. After gathering, part of the process is boiling the bark for about an hour so that it can be stripped and peeled and bound into bundles for baskets. Some participants enjoy this for the opportunity the downtime gives for visiting, remembering past gatherings with family and sharing these memories.
Who doesn’t like wild onions? The class will gather and clean wild onions on Saturday, March 22. The onion hunt will take place on tribal property on the river. And on April 26, participants will learn how to bait a hook on a fishing reel, how to cast and catch fish, and how to clean them. The class will enjoy a fried fish lunch that day as well.
The museum offers each class once a month on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost to attend is $75 for the three classes.
