MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders 39-26 on Dec. 27 to win their fourth straight Liberty Bowl.
The Hogs (7-6), who ended the season with a winning record thanks to the victory, have never lost a bowl game in the Sam Pittman era (3-0). Pittman is the first Arkansas coach in program history to win each of his first three bowl games.
The Razorbacks never trailed, taking a 7-0 lead on Taylen Green’s 12-yard touchdown run and Matthew Shipley’s extra point with 11:28 left in the first quarter.
After Texas Tech’s Gino Garcia kicked a 37-yard field goal with 8:19 left in the period to cut the Arkansas lead to 7-3, the Hogs scored 14 unanswered points to take a 21-3 lead after a quarter. Arkansas got a 1-yard TD run by Braylen Russell and a 94-yard touchdown pass from Green to Dazmin James.
The second quarter belonged to the Red Raiders (8-5), who outscored the Razorbacks 16-0 over the first 14:50 of the period to cut the Arkansas lead to 2119 with 1:58 left before halftime.
However, on the final play of the first half, Shipley connected on a 40yard field goal to give the Razorbacks a 24-19 halftime lead.
The Hogs blanked the Red Raiders 10-0 in the third quarter, thanks to Shipley’s 34-yard field goal and a 47-yard TD pass from Green, the game’s Most Valuable Player, to Tyrell Reed Jr., to put the Razorbacks ahead 34-19 going into the fourth quarter.
Arkansas defensive lineman Anton Juncaj recorded a safety with 14:21 left to play to increase the Arkansas advantage to 36-19.
Shipley then hit a 43yard field goal with 5:02 remaining in the game to up the lead to 39-19 before a late touchdown by the Red Raiders.
“I told the coaching staff that I am so proud of them for getting the kids ready,” Pittman said. “Our kids played extremely hard all year. We were able to win.”
Green, who ended the season with 3,756 yards of total offense which is second all-time for the Hogs behind the late Ryan Mallett’s school record 3,795 in 2010, threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 81 yards and a TD.
As a team, the Razorbacks amassed 559 yards of offense, compared to Texas Tech’s 497. The defense picked off Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond twice and stopped the Red Raiders on fourth down in the first quarter to help prevent them from taking the early lead.
