The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum visited Roland Public Schools on Oct. 29 to tell the story of April 19, 1995, and commemorate the 30th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. With the help of the Oklahoma Forestry Services, the Roland FFA officer team planted a Survivor Tree sapling at the school after the program. The Survivor Tree, an American Elm, withstood the full force of the attack and still to this day continues to stand as a living symbol of resilience in the heart of downtown OKC. Hilary Johnson, whose mother, Rebecca Anderson, was killed in the bombing, shared her story with the students. Oklahoma Senator Tom Woods read the Memorial Mission Statement and Senator Warren Hamilton and foresters from the Oklahoma Forestry Services helped the students plant the sapling. The program is funded in a partnership with the state through the Department of Agriculture.
