It was a rough Senior Night for the Gans Grizzlies as they lost 50-0 to the visiting Wesleyan Christian Mustangs last Friday night at Grizzly Field.
The Mustangs (2-7 overall, 2-2 in District BII-4 play) won for the second straight week, and jumped out to an 18-0 lead after a quarter that was aided by a questionable call.
On the opening kickoff, the Mustangs tried an onside kick. Gans coach Gary Hixon believed the ball only went just more than nine yards — and not the official 10 yards needed to make an onside-kick recovery by the kicking team. However, the officials granted the Mustangs a successful recovery and they went down and scored, then stopped the Grizzlies (1-8, 0-4) on their first possession en route to the 18-point lead.
The Mustangs put away the game with a 26-point second quarter for a 44-0 halftime lead, and put the game into 45-point mercy rule satus with a score in the third quarter.
“We’re so young, and we don’t know how to battle through adversity yet,” Hixon said. “We turned the ball over, and we couldn’t stop their little running back (Isaac Valenzuela-Aramburo). He was a lot quicker than we anticipated, and they would get us outnumbered to the outside — and he ran, ran and ran. I still think he’s running out there on the field somewhere.”
The Grizzlies will conclude the 2024 season at 7 p.m. this Friday as they will travel to meet the Webbers Falls Warriors at Smokey Cox Stadium.
