EMPORIA, Kan. — On a rainy day that included two lightning delays, the 11th-ranked Emporia State Hornets fell 36-7 to Fort Hays State last Saturday afternoon at Welch Stadium.
The Hornets (7-2 overall, 5-2 in MIAA Conference play) fell behind the Tigers (7-3, 5-3) 5-0 after a period and 12-0 in the second quarter before Gunnar Gundy connected with Tyler Kahmann on a 45yard touchdown pass, with Caden Dodson kicking the extra point, to cut the ESU deficit to 12-7 with 4:40 left before halftime. That would be as close as the Hornets got.
The Tigers took a 19-7 lead at halftime and outscored the Hornets 17-0 in the second half.
Former Muldrow Bulldog Trenden Collins caught four passes for 19 yards, which included a 10-yard reception, for the Hornets.
Emporia State will be back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when the Hornets play host to Central Missouri State at Jones Field at Welch Stadium on Senior Day for the Hornets.
