In a regular meeting held on Oct. 14, the Roland Board of Education made significant decisions regarding student transfers and educational programs, and approved a resolution for an election for school board seat No. 5, while also accepting the resignation of board member Utah Everett.
One of the key agenda items was the approval of student transfer capacities for the upcoming school year. The board voted unanimously to accept a total of 15 kindergarten transfer students and approved spaces for various grade levels, maintaining a balance to meet educational needs. Notably, the district has reached full capacity for Pre-K, first grade, fourth grade, and sixth grade, while still allowing for limited transfers in other grades.
Additionally, the board reviewed and approved the Gifted and Talented Program, enhancing educational opportunities for advanced students in the district. This program is designed to challenge and engage gifted learners, ensuring they receive the appropriate resources and support.
The meeting also included discussions about the 202425 budget, which is set to provide a solid foundation for ongoing and future educational initiatives. Superintendent Lori Wiggins presented financial reports, emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility as the district navigates its budgeting process. She also spoke about the progress being made with installing windows at the middle school, and gave updates on the upcoming calendar of events.
In other business, the board voted to go into an executive session to discuss personnel matters, including the potential hiring of Katie Draper for the middle school/high school cafeteria position.
Upon reconvening and stating that no official votes or action was taken, the board unanimously voted to hire Draper.
In new business, the board unanimously voted to accept the resignation of board member Utah Everett and declare the board seat No. 2 as vacant.
After reviewing a request for the use of school facilities, the board voted access to the middle school cafeteria for the purpose of the Roland Alumni Reunion breakfast/lunch on Oct. 26.
