A Muldrow woman has entered a not guilty plea in Sequoyah County District Court on a felony charge of child abuse.
Sonya D. Mitchell, 49, was charged on August 14 and a warrant was issued for her arrest the same day. Following an arraignment last month, she has now been set for an October 2 felony disposition docket.
Muldrow Police officer Chance Yoakum reported on Aug. 3 that he was dispatched to a residence on South Caddo Street regarding an alleged domestic in progress. An individual at the residence said they were summoned there after Mitchell had allegedly slapped and strangled a minor under the age of 15, and then attempted to throw a vase at another party. The individual claimed they put Mitchell in a headlock in order to deescalate the situation, according to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case. They said Mitchell then left the residence and returned to her own home.
Police went to Mitchell’s residence but no one would answer the door. They then returned to the alleged victim’s residence to further investigate the incident.
Officers reported observing visible marks on the minor and confirmed that Mitchell had entered the minor’s room. The minor said they did not know why Mitchell had allegedly assaulted them, according to the affidavit.
Authorities made a Department of Human Services referral regarding the incident and followed up at the residence on Aug. 11. Yoakum said Mitchell answered the door and agreed to fill out a statement because they “were all lying,” according to the affidavit.
Mitchell received a $10,000 bond and is to have no contact with the alleged victim, according to court documents.
