The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans’ service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in local communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans.
Now, American Legion Post 339, located in Roland, is in dire need of new members to join the post. Any veteran who served on active duty for at least one day and was discharged honorably is eligible to join the American Legion. The cost of membership is $37 per year.
“Our membership numbers have been declining for several years. Without adding new members to the rolls, our ability to conduct even routine business has steadily declined,” says American Legion veteran Jeff Covey. “Without new members, the post will eventually lose its charter and shut down. We need new members as soon as possible.”
Additionally, the post’s static display — a helicopter, howitzer and tank in the Roland Park — needs major restoration work.
“We are seeking any volunteers that can possibly clean, sand, paint and perform mechanical repairs on them,” Covey says.
“The tank is in pretty good shape and does not require any servicing at this time. The howitzer needs to be painted and the wheels lifted off the ground via a base plate of some sort to take the pressure off the tires.
“The helicopter is extremely filthy inside and will require an immensely detailed cleaning. It also has several broken windows, and we will probably need someone with expertise and knowledge on how to get it repaired. This will be not be an easy fix as the helicopter is about 10 to 12 feet off the ground. Gaining access to it will prove challenging. Without assistance, we are in danger of losing the helicopter back to Department of the Army,” Covey says.
If you can help repair or clean the static display or to join the American Legion if you are eligible, call Covey at 479-629-6684.
