A Muldrow woman who allegedly left two small children in a vehicle at Dollar General is charged with child neglect after one of the children was able to get out on their own.
Alison R. Wayit, 37, was charged on July 24 and a felony warrant was issued for her arrest the same day, according to Sequoyah County court records.
Muldrow Police officer Jerry Brooks said he was dispatched to Dollar General in Muldrow on July 21 regarding a child, under the age of five, who was found in the parking lot.
Brooks reported Wayit was inside the store shopping and had left the two small children (the other under the age of three) in car seats. But while inside the store, the child under the age of five was able to get out of the car seat, open the driver’s side door, and get out of the vehicle.
When a man and woman parked in the next vehicle over reportedly saw the child get out and start going toward the store, the woman ran to the child and took the child into the store to look for Wayit.
Brooks said Wayit was picking up some items when she overheard someone ask- ing if the child belonged to them, according to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case. He said Wayit then came to the front of the store where the child was.
Brooks said a referral of the case was then made to the Department of Human Services.
If found guilty of the charge, District Attorney Jack Thorp said it is punishable by imprisonment in the Department of Corrections not exceeding life, or in the county jail not exceeding one year, or by a fine of not less than $500 nor more than $5,000, or both imprisonment and fine.
