A native of Muldrow recently received the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS) insignia serving aboard the U.S. Navy warship, USS Boxer, operating out of San Diego, Calif.
The EAWS insignia recognizes those members of the Navy’s enlisted force who have acquired the specific professional skills, knowledge and military experience that result in qualification for service in the aviation activities of the Navy.
Petty Officer 1st Class Brandon Thomasreed, a 2012 graduate of Muldrow High School, joined the Navy 10 years ago.
“I achieved the air warfare pin for showcasing my knowledge and expertise in air warfare,” said Thomasreed. “Additionally, I earned a Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal, a NAM, for my critical role in repairing mission-critical equipment while underway, ensuring we were able to continue underway training and operations.”
Today, Thomasreed serves as an interior communications electrician responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities.
“The achievement of my air warfare pin was not just a reward, but a natural result that comes from the work ethic and determination I’ve developed in the Navy,” added Thomasreed. “Being able to speak on air warfare, I have a better understanding of how crucial our work is and what type of impact my junior sailors have on the ship. Having that expert knowledge is what led me to my NAM, a recognition of technical expertise and leadership in repairing a missioncritical item. Receiving my NAM is proof of the personal growth and development I’ve experienced in the Navy.”
Boxer is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship and the sixth U.S. ship to bear the name of the original HMS Boxer, which was captured by the British during the War of 1812.
Amphibious assault ships transfer Marines, equipment and supplies and can support helicopters or other aircraft. Boxer’s crew is made up of approximately 1,200 crew members and can accommodate up to 1,800 Marines.
As Thomasreed and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy.
