As it joins Global Methodist Church; Transforms to Trinity Methodist Church (GMC)
In a significant move to embark on a new and bold journey, Trinity Methodist Church in Muldrow has officially joined the Global Methodist Church (GMC), culminating in the unveiling of a state-of-the-art digital display sign on Feb. 6, proudly bearing the new church name.
This transition marks a pivotal moment for the congregation, symbolizing a departure from the United Methodist Church (UMC) amidst theological disputes.
The decision to disaffiliate began in August 2022 when concerns about growing un- within the UMC surfaced within the Trinity Church Council. Fueled by disputes on human sexuality and a deeper theological discord, the council unanimously voted on Oct.16, 2022, to request the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference for a Church Conference to vote on disaffiliation.
The disaffiliation process, undertaken by at least 126 United Methodist churches in Oklahoma, spanned four months, involving meticulous documentation and compliance with conference demands.
Trinity Methodist Church faced a substantial “exit fee” exceeding $50,000, aimed at funding the conference’s transition and addressing unfunded liabilities.
A crucial informational meeting held on Feb. 26, 2023, allowed representatives from the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference to discuss disaffiliation respectfully with Trinity members. The subsequent Church Conference vote on March 12, 2023, saw 37 members in favor and two against, marking Muldrow’s departure from the UMC after 55 years.
Despite the challenges, Trinity Methodist Church experienced a revival. Worship attendance rebounded, and the youth group witnessed significant growth, expanding from 15 to 60 attendees by Fall 2023. The congregation, undistracted by theological disputes, saw a surge in new members professing faith in Jesus Christ.
The journey continued with Trinity Methodist Church officially uniting with the GMC on Aug. 1, 2023. The congregation’s affiliation with the GMC allows for a deeper connection with churches that affirm scriptural truth, holiness, and the principles of John Wesley, without relinquishing ownership of church property and assets.
The GMC, a new association of churches, welcomed Trinity Methodist Church into its fold, emphasizing a commitment to traditional Methodist doctrine and denomination structure. As of Jan. 1, 47 of the 126 disaffiliated churches in Oklahoma have joined the Heartland Provisional Conference of the GMC.
Trinity Methodist Church’s vote to join the GMC signals a new chapter in its future, dedicated to bringing people closer to the living and healing Jesus Christ. The congregation extends an invitation to Christ-followers of all denominations to join in this ongoing revival.
