Central teams sweep Porum tournament title, while CHS JV teams consolation champs; Gans boys take third place, while Lady Grizzlies finish seventh
PORUM — It was quite a Saturday for the Central High School varsity and junior varsity basketball teams at the Cross Telephone Tournament.
The CHS varsity teams swept the championships, while both consolation title games were won by both CHS JV teams.
The Central varsity boys got past Gore 50-45 to win the boys’ championship after the Lady Tigers downed tournament-host Porum 59-40.
The Tigers reached the finals with a 66-21 rout of Graham-Dustin on Thursday and a 4936 victory over Gans in Friday’s championship semifinals.
The Lady Tigers made it to the finals with a 68-14 rout of Graham-Dustin in Thursday’s opening-round game, then did likewise to Midway in Friday’s championship semifinal by the score of 56-14.
Both Central junior varsity teams swept the consolation finals, with the Tigers winning 5954 over Keota and the Lady Tigers prevailing 31-25 over Keota. The Central JV boys opened with a 54-39 loss to Gore on Thursday, but defeated Midway 68-45 in the consolation semifinals on Friday. The Central JV girls, who opened the tournament Thursday with a 56-23 loss to tournament-host Porum, won their consolation semifinal contest 32-29 over Gans.
The Grizzlies did end up with some tournament hardware as they won Saturday’s thirdplace game 52-37 over the host Porum Panthers. The Grizzlies opened with a 51-46 victory over Keota on Thursday before losing to Central in Friday’s championship semifinals.
The Lady Grizzlies came in seventh place after they routed Graham-Dustin 41-8 in Saturday morning’s seventh-place game. The Lady Grizzlies lost Thursday’s opening-round game 29-22 to Gore before losing Friday’s consolation semifinals to the Central JV.
In the boys’ championship game, Devon Baggs scored a gamehigh 16 points and Devon Baggs added 15 points for the Tigers (8-7), followed by Coy Blackburn with seven points, Isaac Rogers with six points, Joseph Lee with four points and Cade Tucker with two points.
In the Central boys’ championship semifinal win over Gans, Baggs scored 15 points and Blackburn added 12 points to lead Central, followed by Sainer with seven points, Jace Mendenhall with six points, Tucker with four points, Lee with three points and Hardy Buzzard with two points.
In defeat, Josh Brunk scored a game-high 17 points to lead Gans, followed by Mayson Clifton with nine points, Ashton Langston and Clay Martin with four points each and Nakota White with two points.
In the Central boys’ opening-round win over Graham-Dustin, the Tigers put a trio of players into double figures, led by Baggs with 14 points, while Tucker and Hardy Buzzard each had 10 points. Blackburn and Noah Buzzard each had nine points, followed by Mendenhall with eight points, Rogers with four points, Connor Walters with two points.
In the girls’ championship game, Cambree Bair scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Tigers (12-3), followed by Hadlie Woods with 18 points, Haley Cheek with eight points, Koda Robbins with seven points and Ryleigh Pierce with two points.
In the Central girls’ championship semifinal victory over Midway, Bair scored a gamehigh 14 points and Robbins added 11 points to lead Central, followed by Woods and Autumn Cernicek with eight points each, Ayrland Jiles with seven points, Pierce with six points and Cheek with two points.
In the Central girls’ opening-round victory over Graham-Dustin, a quartet of Lady Tigers reached double figures scoring, led by a game-high 15 points by Woods, followed by Bair with 14 points and 11 points apiece from Jiles and Cheek. Pierce had seven points, followed by Robbins with four points and Cernicek with two points.
In the Central JV boys’ consolation finals win over Keota, Bo Locust scored a game-high 19 points and Paitton Merrill added 11 points to lead the Tigers, followed by Nathan Vann and Cole Holcomb with nine points each, Braxin Goodson with eight points and Gavin Randolph with three points.
In the Central JV boys’ consolation win over Midway, Vann scored a game-high 19 points and Merrill added 14 points to lead the Tigers, followed by Locust with nine points, Randolph with seven points, Holcomb and Jake Woods with five points each, Cale Stewart with four points and Goodson and Caleb Young each with three points.
In the Central JV boys’ opening-round loss to Gore, Randolph had 14 points and Vann added 10 points to lead the Tigers, followed by Goodson with five points, Brycen Chandler- Eisman with four points and Locust, Merrill and Holcomb with two points apiece.
In the Central JV girls’ consolation finals victory over Keota, Alyvia Warner and Alyssa Harris led the Lady Tigers with nine points each, followed by Brianna Taylor with seven points, Paris Campbell with five points and Keeley Poindexter with a free throw.
In the Central JV girls’ consolation semifinal victory over Gans, Campbell led the Lady Tigers with 12 points, followed by Warner with nine points, Gracie Thompson with six points and Harris with five points.
In defeat, Paniagua led all scorers with 13 points, followed by Brianna Burris with six points, Aaliyah Taylor with five points, K’Cee Osburn with four points and Stevie Pratt with a free throw.
In the Central JV girls’ opening-round loss to Porum, Thompson led the Lady Tigers with eight points, followed by Warner with six points, Campbell with three points and Taylor, Harris and Poindexter with two points apiece.
In the Gans boys’ third-place win over Midway, the Grizzlies (6-8) saw four players reach double figures scoring, led by a gamehigh 14 points by Langston, followed by White with 12 points and Brunk and Clifton with 11 points apiece. Martin added four points.
In the Gans boys’ opening-round win over Keota, a trio of players hit for double figures, led by Brunk’s 14 points, Clifton’s 13 points and White’s 10 points. Martin had nine points, followed by Bryce Stevens with three points and Langston with two points.
In the girls’ seventhplace game, the Lady Grizzlies (5-10) were led by Melania Paniagua’s 11 points, followed by Pratt with eight points, Osborn with six points and Reina Gaona, Amarys White, Brighton Dorsey and MaKinzie Kimble with four points apiece.
In the Gans girls’ opening- round loss to Gore, the Lady Pirates jumped out to an 11-1 lead after period and never lost their advantage, although the Lady Grizzlies doubled them 8-4 in the fourth quarter to make things interesting.
In defeat, Burris and Taylor led the Lady Grizzlies with six points each, followed by Paniagua with five points, Pratt with three points and Gaona with two points.
