The Gans High School basketball teams each got their first win of the season Friday night with a home sweep over the Keota teams at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse as the Lady Grizzlies tamed the Lady Lions 34-17 before the Grizzlies edged Lions 46-44.
The season did not open the way the Gans High School teams had hoped in their season openers Nov. 27 at Okay as the Lady Grizzlies lost 57-7, while the Grizzlies fell 83-32.
In the Gans’ girls’ Friday night win, the Lady Grizzlies (1-1) doubled up the Lady Lions 10-5 at the end of a quarter, then put away the game with a 10-0 second period for a 20-5 halftime advantage. Gans took a 26-11 lead into the final quarter.
For the game, Melania Paniagua scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Lady Grizzlies, followed by Brianna Burris with nine points, Reina Gaona and Aaliyah Taylor with four points each, K’Cee Osburn and Stevie Pratt each with two points and Destiny Phillips with a free throw.
In the Gans’ boys victory on Friday night, the Grizzlies (1-1) led 24-18 after a quarter, but the Lions cut their deficit to 36-32 at halftime and 43-40 entering the final period. However, Gans was able to keep Keota at bay the rest of the way.
For the game, Josh Brunk scored a gamehigh 18 points and Mayson Clifton added 14 points to lead the Grizzlies, followed by Nakota White with seven points, Ashton Langston with four points and Bryce Stevens with a free throw.
There were no individual statistics on either Okay game reported by press time.
