A Roland woman is facing a felony charge of possession of a stolen vehicle after she was found to be driving a vehicle belonging to another individual.
Stacey R. Thornburg, 43, was charged Nov. 14 in Sequoyah County District Court and received a $3,000 bond. She is now scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. Nov. 29 arraignment with Associate District Judge Kyle Waters.
Muldrow Police officer Richard Matthews reported on Nov. 11 after asking dispatch for a tag return on a gold 2006 Ford Explorer, the vehicle reportedly came back registered to a 2013 silver Chevrolet Travers.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Thornburg, and explained to her why he’d pulled her over. Thornburg said she’d just purchased the vehicle a few days prior and had a bill of sale. Matthews ran the VIN number and received a hit that the vehicle had allegedly been stolen, according to the probable cause affidavit. Dispatch was then able to confirm that the vehicle had reportedly been stolen out of Talihina.
When Thornburg was questioned about how she obtained the vehicle, Matthews told her the vehicle had been reported as stolen. After dispatch was able to confirm the vehicle as stolen, Thornburg was taken into custody and arrested.
Thornburg told the officer she’d gotten the vehicle from a man that reportedly had a salvage yard on 6th Street in Fort Smith.
She was then transported to the Sequoyah County Detention Center where she was booked in on the charge.
District Attorney Jack Thorp said the crime is punishable by imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections for a term not to exceed two years.
