COUNCIL HILL — The Gans Grizzlies won their first game of the 2023 football season Friday night in a good old-fashioned shootout as they outlasted the Midway Chargers 78-74.
The Grizzlies (1-3) never trailed, jumping out to a 20-0 lead, and the closest the Chargers (0-4) got was the final margin as Gans had the game’s last possession and ran out the clock.
Gans quarterback Hunter Walters had 373 total yards of offense, passing for 309 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 64 yards and two more TDs.
All total, the Grizzlies scored 10 touchdowns on the night, with Caiden Kennedy scoring four TDs, Nakota White and Josh Brunk each scoring twice and Anthony Vasquez scoring a touchdown.
Offensively, the Grizzlies amassed 519 yards, which was a performance more for which Gans coach Brian Morton has been seeking out of his team.
“We looked more like I thought we’d be in our opener,” Morton said. “Offensively, things are starting to fall into place. Our linemen are picking up on their blocks.
