GANS SOFTBALL
The Gans Lady Grizzlies got win No. 1 of the 2023 fast-pitch softball season on Aug. 15, getting a road victory over the host Gore Lady Pirates by a score of 23-12.
The Lady Grizzlies (1-4) never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then stretching the advantage to 8-0 in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, a 10-run inning put Gans ahead 23-6, then the Lady Grizzlies had to withstand a Gore rally that almost took away the run-rule status and force the game to go into the fifth inning.
For the game, Brianna Burris was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four runs batted in and three runs scored, Reina Gaona was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored and K’Cee Osburn was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored for Gans. Burris (1-2) got the win, recording one strikeout.
However, Thursday was a rough day for the Lady Grizzlies as they dropped both games in the Westville Festival, losing 22-0 to the host Lady Yellowjackets and 12-0 to Locust Grove.
In the loss to the host Lady Yellowjackets, Westville scored 11 runs in the first inning, nine runs in the second inning and twice in the third inning.
In defeat, Gaona and Makinzie Kimble each singled for the only two hits for Gans.
Brianna Burris took the loss, despite recording two strikeouts in two innings of work. Gaona pitched the final inning with a strikeout.
In the loss to Locust Grove, Gans fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, which became an 11-0 deficit by the second inning with the final Locust Grove run scoring in the third inning.
In defeat, Burris hit a single for the Lady Grizzlies’ lone hit in the game.
Gaona (0-2) suffered the loss, although she got one strikeout in two innings pitched. Burris got the final two outs of the game.
Gans’ road game Aug. 14 at Watts was canceled.
